A national survey on property market attitudes has shown that the majority of Australians still want a big slice of land to work, rest and play on.
This trend has been confirmed by QM Properties Sales Manager Damien Ross in recent sales in South East Queensland.
“We have found that whenever a larger block goes on the market in our estates, we achieve a quick sale,” he said.
The survey conducted by Slater and Gordon nationally found that the majority of respondents wanted a home with plenty of land and that they were prepared to relocate for their dream home. 50% of respondents in Brisbane said they would look for property outside the 10km radius of the city. The data also revealed that 50% would rather buy a house and land package in this outer area then buy off the plan in the city.
“Central Lakes, our largest Northside community, is a classic case in point,” said Damien.
Russell and Karen Gibb have just moved into their stylish new 287 m² home at Central Lakes. The retired baby boomers relocated to Central Lakes after apartment living for 20 years.
“We have worked in the management rights industry all over Brisbane including in Coronation Towers in Milton,” said Karen. “Over the years we have also renovated nine units which I project managed myself.”
“So we really know about inner-city lifestyle and apartment living,” she said.
The Gibbs’ enjoyed the advantages of high density apartments, including expansive views of the Brisbane River, and shops and cafes nearby, but decided that a change of pace was needed for their next stage of life. However, the new home needed to have the right outlook and accommodate a special ‘toy’.
The Central Lakes house offers expansive water views of the lake and shelters their treasured fifth wheeler mobile home.
“We worked with our builder Kerry Guppy of Hotondo Homes to create a custom ‘caraport’ that sits adjacent to the garage,” said Karen. “The caraport roof needed to be one and a half metres higher than the rest of the house roof to fit in the vehicle.”
To achieve these ‘must haves’ for the Gibbs’, a large lakeside block was essential, and they chose one of the largest at Central Lakes.
“Central Lakes land size is one of the largest in the Moreton Bay Shire with all blocks being a minimum 450sqm up to 1000sqm,” said Damien. “This 900 metre block was snapped up by the Gibbs’ a few days after it went on the market.”
The couple have made the expansive view the focal point of the home with a wide wraparound deck facing the house. Glass stackers slide back, opening out to alfresco dining and living area with panoramic lake views. The elevated corner block will never be built out and gives keen gardener Russell plenty to work with in the years ahead.
Their builder Kerry Guppy of Hotonodo Homes, also lives in Central Lakes himself coined the caraport phrase after several similar requests from couples intending to travel in their retirement.
“The baby boomers are still in love with the great Aussie dream of a house and garden,” said Damien. “They have got the toys like mobile homes and boats and are looking forward to enjoying them in their retirement.”
“Whilst high density living is here to stay, 70% of the survey respondents believe that land size will be even more reduced in the next decade,” he said. “They are jumping onto it when it becomes available, which is why developments like Central Lakes with larger blocks have been so popular.”
“We have a beautiful new modern home built to our exact requirements,” said Karen.
As well is travelling around in their caravan, the Gibbs’ enjoy walking to enjoy a coffee at the shopping centre, cycling and using the exercise machines in the park nearby.
“The decision to move was easy, because of the larger blocks, we lived in our motor home for a few months at Caboolture while our home was built” she said. “Now we are the envy of all our Brisbane friends.
